1636 – Missionary Jean de Bredbeuf is the first to document the
game of lacrosse
1794 – A match between the Sebeca and Mohawk tribes results in the
creation of the basic rules of lacrosse
1867 – Dr. William Beers finalizes the first set of playing rules
for the Montreal Lacrosse Club
1887 – New York University established the first lacrosse club in
the US
1881 – The first intercollegiate tournament is held in New York
City
1890 – The first women’s lacrosse game is played in St. Andrews,
Scotland
1904 – Lacrosse is played as an exhibition sport at the Amsterdam
Olympics
1905 – US Intercollegiate Lacrosse League is formed
1926 – Women’s lacrosse is reestablished in the US at the Bryn
Mawr School in Baltimore
1947 – The men’s field positions are renames, from goalkeeper,
point, cover point, first defense, second defense, center,
second attack, first attack out home and in home to today’s
goalkeeper, defense, midfield and attack
1971 – Men’s lacrosse is formally recognized by the NCAA
1982 – The first NCAA women’s championship is held at Trenton
State University
1983 – NFL Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown is inducted into
the Lacrosse Hall of Fame
2003 – 38,000 spectators watch Virginia defeat Johns Hopkins in
Baltimore for the NCAA Championship
2003 – 2006 – the NCAA men’s Lacrosse Final Four has the highest
attendance of any NCAA recognized sport
